The reddish-brown part of Sardonyx is also known as Sard. Like the mineral itself, the name Sardonyx is made up of the black and white Onyx and the orange-brown Sard; the spelling Sardonix is therefore incorrect. A stone is always considered Sardonyx if at least two of the three colors are contained in the stone.
