The origin of the name "Eclipse" is unclear. Presumably, however, it is derived from the English term "eclipse", i.e. darkening, and alludes to the contrast of black and yellow-orange colors of the mineral, which is reminiscent of a solar eclipse. Synonyms are Bumblebee or Bumbelbee Jasper/Jaspis, Bumblebee Jasper or Bumblebee Stone, Mustard Jasper or Mustard Jasper, mineralogically correct is the name Realgar-Calcite.
