Cryolite was first discovered in 1799 in Ivittuut (Greenland) by Peder Christian Abildgaard (1740-1801), who also named the newly discovered mineral. The name cryolite is made up of the Greek words "kryos" (frost, ice) and "lithos" (stone) and alludes to the appearance of the mineral. Spellings such as cryolite, chryolite, chriolite or kriolite are therefore incorrect.
