The first discovery of Dumortierite was made in 1881 in a quarry in the French department of Rhône; the first scientific description was taken by the mineralogist M.F. Gonnard. The latter named the newly discovered mineral in honor of the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1801 - 1876). Occasionally found spellings like dumorterite, dumortiriet, dumortirite or dumoterite are therefore not correct.
