In modern gemstone healing, the white opal, also known as milk opal, stands for the themes of open-mindedness, exchange and community; it supports the acceptance of oneself and others.
From a mineralogical point of view, kasholong is a transitional form of opal to chalcedony, as the opal stone has lost a large proportion of the water it originally contained. Its color is normally porcelain-like to milky white, but can be slightly greyish, yellowish or reddish to violet even within a stone. Kascholong is opaque to slightly translucent and has a mother-of-pearl luster without opalescence. The name kasholong comes from the Mongolian language. However, it is still not clear how the name came about. The following is suspected: The explorer Pallas wrote in 1776 that "Kä" means beautiful in Mongolian and "Tscholon" means stone - thus "beautiful stone". More or less well-known synonyms are: Cacholong, mother-of-pearl opal, porcelain opal and Kalmyk agate.
