The first scientific description of rhyolite was made in 1860 by Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen (1833 - 1905). The name rhyolite is derived from the two Greek words "rhein" (to flow) and "lithos" (stone) and alludes to the volcanic formation. Eye jasper is a well-known synonym; the terms quartz porphyry and liparite are outdated.
