Pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulphide. Its main components are iron and Sulphur - sometimes you can even smell the typical smell of Sulphur!
The meaning of the name Pyrite is derived from the Greek word "pyr", meaning "fire". Early humans used Pyrite to make fire when matches were not yet available. To do this, they chipped off small pieces of the pyrite crystal with a hard flint, which then ignited.
In gemstone healing, Pyrite is said to be an effective aid to self-knowledge and making people aware of their own shadow sides. Pyrite is also popularly known as the "health stone", as the mineral was used in earlier times to clarify the causes of ailments and support recovery. Today, liver iron ore, liver gravel and liver chalk are less common names for Pyrite.
