Demantoid is a variety of Andradite, i.e. chromium garnet, colored green by chromium.

Locality: Soghan Mine, Kerman (Iran)
The mineral received its name from the Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiøld (1792 - 1866) in reference to the old German "Demant" (diamond) because of the high brilliance, which reminds of diamonds. Mineralogically wrong are the names Olivine and Ural Emerald for the Demantoid.
