The stone known as Leopard Stone or Leopard Skin Jasper is mineralogically a Meta-Rhyolite (Leopard Skin Jasper).
The stones are about 5 x 7 cm in size.
Due to their harmonious shape and the large surfaces, they are excellent for massaging or laying on, but are also popular as hand charms.
Trade name for the leopard skin stone is also leopard skin jasper, leopardite, leopard skin rhyolite or leopard jasper. The name Poppy Jasper, which is occasionally found in the wholesale trade, is not correct for the Leopard Skin Jasper.
The first scientific description of rhyolite was made in 1860 by Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen (1833 - 1905). The name Rhyolite is derived from the two Greek words "rhein" (to flow) and "lithos" (stone) and alludes to the volcanic formation. Of several possible spellings, e.g. rhiolite, riolite, ryholite or ryolite, rhyolite has become accepted in retail and wholesale. Eye jasper is a well-known synonym; the terms quartz porphyry and liparite are outdated.
