The mineralogical name for the gemstone from the Caribbean is "blue pectolite", known other names are Atlantis stone and Travelina. Larimar was named in 1975 by Miguel Mendez, a mine owner from the Dominican Republic, who created the name from the name of his daughter Lari and the Spanish word for sea (mar).

Modern gemstone therapy knows Larimar as a stone for openness and the expansion of perception.
