Vesuvianite, also called Idokras/Idocras; Vesuvianite or Jewreinowite, was first recognized and described by the famous mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 -1817). Werner named the newly discovered mineral after the only known locality at that time at the volcano Vesuvius in Italy. The spellings Vesufian or Vezuvian are therefore not correct.
