Hildegard von Bingen (1098 to 1179) already wrote about the effects of heliotrope; at the time, the mineral was simply referred to as "jasper":
"When a person struggles in his mind about something or wants to form thoughts about what he is drawn to with zeal, when he has great things in mind or needs advice, he puts a jasper in his mouth. Then the power of the stone passes into his mind and strengthens the mind and restrains it so that it does not scatter and lose itself in distractions and does not find a clear point of view, but that it becomes of real use."
