Vesuvianite, also known as Idokras/Idocras; Vesuvianite or Jewreinowite, was first recognized and described by the well-known mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 -1817). Werner named the newly discovered mineral after the only known site at the time on the Vesuvius volcano in Italy. The spellings Vesufian or Vezuvian are therefore incorrect.
