Selenite was already known to the Romans and was used instead of glass as a window pane, as Glass could not yet be made flat and transparent at that time. In the encyclopaedia "Naturalis historia", Pliny the Elder (23 - 79) described the mining and use of selenite. The Romans called the mineral "lapis specularis", i.e. "mirror stone". The name selenite is derived from the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene.
Owls are a symbol of wisdom and prudence. They stand for good powers of observation, erudition and knowledge and are therefore often depicted with glasses or a book. The animals are highly valued as talismans for learning and therefore adorn many libraries and bookshops. As a bird of the night that flies almost silently but can hear and see very well, the owl is also a symbol of mindfulness and attentiveness.
The animal engravings are varnished to protect them from dust and scratches.
