The first finding of Dumortierite was in 1881 in a quarry in the French department Rhône; the first scientific description was taken by the mineralogist M.F. Gonnard. The latter named the newly discovered mineral in honor of the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1801 - 1876). Occasionally found spellings like Dumorterite, Dumortiriet, Dumortirite or Dumoterite are therefore not correct.
