Agate geodes (also called agate druse) are formed when in cavities in volcanic rock slowly during solidification and drying of the silica one quartz layer after the next is deposited and so the individual agate bands are formed. Depending on the type and amount of material present, small works of art of nature are created with different colored stripes, e.g. transparent to white (quartz) or purple-violet (amethyst) and a more or less large cavity remains.
