The name Antimonite is derived from the Latin word "antimonium" as a term for spit glass. This term in turn goes back to the pointed, shiny crystals. Antimonite consists of up to over 70% of the element antimony (chemical symbol: Sb), one of the rarest substances in the earth's crust - only about 0.00002% consists of antimony!
Antimonite was already known in ancient Egypt in the 3rd millennium BC and in antiquity. It was used to darken the rims of the eyes - this was considered both an ideal of beauty and a means of defense. In ancient Greece, the mineral was used to produce bronze. Today, Antimonite is an important raw material for the production of batteries and semiconductors.
