Gabbro was named by the German geologist Christian Leopold von Buch (1774 - 1853) after the village of Gabbro near Florence. Gabbro is also sold in retail and wholesale under the name Mystic Merlinite.
Gabbro is the plutonitic counterpart of basalt, i.e. the mineral crystallizes deep down in the earth's crust from magma, which under other boundary conditions would have been transported to the earth's surface by a volcanic eruption and solidified there to basalt.
