The historical slate mining in Lehesten in the Thuringian Forest is one of the oldest and largest open-cast mines for roofing slate in Europe. Slate has been mined, split and processed into slate panels, roof and wall coverings in Lehesten since the 13th century.
Pyrite in slate is also called Apache gold in reference to the places where it was found in the USA. The white bands and areas are mostly quartz, occasionally calcite.
